Radar echo-arrival warning system
When echoes approach a county, push an alert to a phone. Built on public radar images that carry no geolocation.
What it does
The application monitors reflectivity from six single-site radars and a regional mosaic, with a hand-checked table of which radar covers which county. It runs every five minutes and sends alerts through WeChat, ntfy and Bark.
The hard parts
- Georeferencing. The public radar images have no coordinates, so each was registered by matching county boundaries, recovering the station position and pixel scale.
- False alarms. An alert needs an intensity threshold, confirmation over consecutive frames and a proximity buffer, which together suppress clutter.
The system ran on trial in July and August 2026.
